Hyprop invests R45 million in major solar project at The Glen, advancing its energy strategy
Hyprop Investments, co-owner and manager of The Glen Shopping Centre, has successfully completed and commissioned Phase 2 of its solar-PV project. This R45 million investment at the landmark retail centre in Johannesburg’s southern suburbs demonstrates Hyprop’s commitment to the responsible use of carbon-sourced energy and driving down operational costs.
In response to rising energy prices, Hyprop has intensified its focus on management and sustainable sourcing of energy. The Group has established a dedicated internal division and partners with external experts to optimise operational efficiencies and reduce energy consumption.
Phase 2 at The Glen Shopping Centre boosts the centre’s total installed solar capacity to 4 304 kWp. The system is expected to generate over 5 gigawatt-hours of clean electricity annually, supplying over 40% of the centre’s energy needs and saving more than R12 million per year.
The solar-PV panels have been installed on expansive carport structures that provide both shade for shoppers and renewable energy for the centre. The Glen’s solar project is a key part of Hyprop’s broader strategy to reduce its environmental impact and operational costs, with South Africa’s portfolio now boasting solar capacity of 21 975 kWp and meeting up to 17% of the portfolio’s energy requirements.
“We are committed to delivering sustainable value across our portfolios, and our investments in solar and energy management at The Glen highlight our proactive approach to operational excellence and responsible environmental management,” said Steven Riley, Head of Projects and Sustainability at Hyprop. “By embracing advanced technology, efficient processes, and a focus on sustainability, we are helping shape a resilient future for the South African retail landscape without compromising the future.”
The Group has four other solar-PV projects underway in its South Africa portfolio, and two solar-PV projects underway in its Croatian retail centres. Various feasibility studies are currently being undertaken for battery energy storage systems in the South African portfolio.
